Our Pines Capture Best

Our Production Varieties captured 25% more carbon on average, with some varieities capturing more than 100% more carbon from the air than other planting stock (see Figure 1). Tonnes of carbon dioxide captured per hectare per year are:

  • 16.5 for tonnes existing radiata pine forests and
  • 20.6 tonnes for our Production Varieties

Our Production Varieties maximize carbon sequestration through substantial increases in biomass resulting from increased growth rate and wood density.

To put this in perspective, each year a hectare of forest will capture the amount of CO2 emmitted by a large petrol-driven car (10litres/100km) traveling

  • 66,000 km per year (the average distance traveled per car per year), for existing pine plantations and
  • 80,000 km per year for our improved Production Varieites!

The use of our Production Varieities would substantially increase the returns from carbon forests.
